LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design) is a rating system developed by the
U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) to assess
the environmental sustainability of building
designs. A Canadian version of LEED was developed
by the Canadian Green Building Council. LEED
is a point-based rating system in which points
are earned for building attributes considered
environmentally beneficial. A building design
can be certified to one of four levels: Platinum,
Gold, Silver, or Certified.
The best sustainable buildings are the result of a
multi-disciplinary design process. Enermodal has
considerable experience in leading multi-disciplinary
design workshops. Enermodal acts as a “design
facilitator,” making suggestions for building features
and helping various professionals understand the
possible interactions between building systems.
A unique feature of Enermodal’s workshops is the use of “green shopping lists.” Prior to each workshop, Enermodal uses its expertise in computer simulation and green design to develop a list of possible building concept designs. A variety of sustainable technologies are assessed in terms of suitability for LEED
credits, including construction costs, annual operating
cost savings and payback periods. Workshop participants
work through the list, and identify those concepts and
technologies that result in the best design at the
lowest cost. Enermodal provides a “full service” approach
to achieving LEED certification. Enermodal assists
and leads the design team through the LEED
process, providing insight on how green building
projects meet the requirements of each credit. Enermodal performs the required
energy and daylighting simulations,
building
commissioning, and drawing and specification
review for all disciplines. We can also provide
leading-edge design of the
mechanical and electrical
systems.
Enermodal develops
construction and waste management
plans and green material specifications. During
building construction, we deliver contractor
training courses and provide site reviews to
assess compliance to LEED requirements. When
a project is complete, Enermodal prepares the
full LEED documentation package for submission
for certification. We can provide on-going support
through post occupancy surveys and through the
measurement and verification of building energy
performance. We are particularly proud of our
efforts to increase building occupant “green
education,” with our customized touch screen
“LEED kiosks.”
Enermodal is one of North America’s
pre-eminent LEED consultants. We were the first LEED
Accredited Professionals in Ontario. Enermodal’s president,
Stephen Carpenter, is a LEED® Faculty member and chair
of the LEED® Canada Technical Advisory Group. Our
Canadian projects are worth over $4 billion, and
represent
over 45% of all LEED Canada certified buildings and
85% of LEED-NC certified projects in Ontario.
Enermodal has achieved several LEED "firsts" and "mosts":
- first LEED Canada
certified building: Stratus Winery, Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario
- first LEED Canada Gold
certified building: Region of Waterloo EMS Fleet
Facility
- first LEED-CS certification: CSL headquarters, Cambridge, Ontario
- first LEED Platinum building in
Ontario: Toronto Region Conservation
Authority, Restoration Services
Workshop, Vaughan
- first LEED Canada-CI project (Platinum): Enermodal Calgary Office
- first LEED-ND Stage 2 certification (Gold): Currie Barracks, Calgary, Alberta
- most energy efficient office building in Canada:
A Grander View (Enermodal corporate headquarters), Kitchener, Ontario
- most certified projects in Canada:
62
- most LEED projects on-the-go in
Canada: 250
