Window Design and Specifications

Over 25% of energy use in buildings is attributable to windows. Through proper window design and selection, many problems associated with building heating, cooling, lighting, thermal comfort, and condensation can be alleviated. Enermodal applies broad experience in the energy and building industry to assess the technical feasibility and market potential of window products and design. Detailed simulation models predict energy savings and comfort benefits. A comparison of product costs/benefits determines the economic feasibility and market potential for the product.

For window and curtainwall manufacturers, Enermodal can improve product design and meet the design challenges of unique applications. As an example, Enermodal provided consulting services for the new windows at the Canadian Library of Parliament. We assessed the performance of window design options, developed, and witnessed a testing program and inspected the window installation.

Enermodal assists building owners with the selection, performance specification, and field review of windows for new and existing buildings. We determine the optimum window characteristics for energy savings, resistance to air and water penetration and long-term durability. For example, Enermodal managed a $1 million window retrofit program at St Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener, Ontario. Enermodal designed the retrofit program, developed the project specifications, coordinated the contractor work and inspected and tested the final installation.
