Window Rating

Enermodal Engineering photo

Over 25% of energy use in buildings is attributable to windows. Through proper window design and selection, many problems associated with building heating, cooling, lighting, thermal comfort, and condensation can be alleviated. Enermodal applies broad experience in the energy and building industry to assess the technical feasibility and market potential of window products and design. Detailed simulation models predict energy savings and comfort benefits. A comparison of product costs/benefits determines the economic feasibility and market potential for the product.

For window and curtainwall manufacturers, Enermodal can improve product design and meet the design challenges of unique applications.

Enermodal assists building owners with the selection, performance specification, and field review of windows for new and existing buildings. We determine the optimum window characteristics for energy savings, resistance to air and water penetration and long-term durability. For example, Enermodal managed a $1 million window retrofit program at St Mary’s Hospital in Kitchener, Ontario. Enermodal designed the retrofit program, developed the project specifications, coordinated the contractor work and inspected and tested the final installation.

Energy Simulation Services for Commercial Fenestration Products

Enermodal is an Accredited Calculation Entity (ACE) and an Accredited Simulation Laboratory (ASL) for NRFC's Component Modeling Approach.

Today, more than ever, commercial fenestration products need to achieve a high level of energy efficiency to comply with architectural specifications and building codes. Enermodal Engineering has a unique set of services that help commercial fenestration manufacturers meet this growing demand.

Using state of the art simulation software, Enermodal can provide analysis of commercial fenestration systems using CSA/NFRC methodology; the only recognized standards in North America for rating fenestration products. We can provide:

  • Energy ratings (U-factors, R-values, SHGC, VT) and condensation resistance
  • Estimates of frame/glass temperatures with colour temperature plots
  • Simulated estimates of CSA Temperature Index (I-value) and AAMA CRF
  • Assistance with glass and spacer selection and product design for improved energy ratings and condensation resistance.
  • Training for your people on the use of Therm and Window so they can do modeling internally.

As an NFRC and CSA certified simulation lab, Enermodal can provide simulation reports for product certification or to show compliance with an architectural specification. These simulations are performed by Enermodal’s NFRC certified, professional engineers.

Enermodal also has in-house expertise in NFRCs latest rating program created specifically for non-residential products, the Component Modelling Approach. This program allows users, such as architects, to select frame, spacer and glass components from an online database to determine an overall product energy rating with very little effort. We would be happy to help you get your products included in the CMA database so architects can find them easily.

With the large number of commercial window manufacturers looking to provide services to architecture firms, the Component Modelling Approach can optimize your products’ visibility to architects in the online database.
